ABBOTT: 1979 Announcement

Road to SDCC: Saladin Ahmed and Sami Kivelä Debut the FINAL CHAPTER of ABBOTT

Hugo Nominated Trilogy ABBOTT Comes to a Close with New Series in October 2023

BOOM! Studios today announced ABBOTT: 1979, a new series from Miles Morales: Spider-Man mastermind & Eisner Award-winning writer Saladin Ahmed and acclaimed artist Sami Kivelä (Machine Gun Wizards). Jump back into the action of the hard-boiled trilogy’s final chapter in October 2023.

On the eve of the 1980s and the Reagan Administration, Detroit is burdened with an oppressive darkness–both political and supernatural. Dejected and tough tabloid reporter Elena Abbott, who previously defeated the occult forces responsible for her husband’s death, must dig herself out from rock bottom if she’s going to save Detroit from the Umbra, one last time… Elena will have to contend with the dark cloud hanging over Detroit… and over her own life.

ABBOTT: 1979 #1 features a main cover by Taj Francis (Wonder Woman) as well as variant cover art by acclaimed artists Justine Florentino (Grim), Nimit Malavia (Dead Boy Detectives), and more!

Saladin Ahmed is the Eisner-award winning writer of Miles Morales: Spider-Man, The Magnificent Ms. Marvel, Black Bolt, Terrorwar, and Starsigns. He was nominated for the Hugo and Stoker awards for the first volume of ABBOTT, which was also named a Michigan Notable Book by the Library of Michigan.

“I couldn’t be more excited to bring you the next (and final!) chapter in the saga of hard-nosed reporter Elena Abbott, sorcerous savior of the city of Detroit,” said Ahmed. “ABBOTT: 1973 left Elena in a grim place, and things have only gotten worse since — for her and her beloved city. Now Detroit itself is being consumed — eaten alive by the Umbra. And it will take all Elena’s got to keep her own spark from being snuffed out. From the beginning I’ve imagined ABBOTT as a three-act story, and I’m positively thrilled to team with the awe-inspiring Sami to bring this story to its epic conclusion.”

Sami Kivelä is a comic book artist from Finland. In addition to Abbott, you may recognize him from titles such as Undone By Blood, The Heathens, Machine Gun Wizards, Beautiful Canvas and Everfrost.

“It’s always a pleasure to return to Detroit with Elena. I hope the readers are as excited about ABBOTT: 1979 as I am!” said Kivelä.

Readers can find ABBOTT & ABBOTT 1973 softcovers available everywhere books are sold. While investigating police brutality and corruption in 1970s Detroit, journalist Elena Abbott uncovers supernatural forces being controlled by a secret society of the city’s elite. In the uncertain social and political climate of the city, hard-nosed, chain-smoking tabloid reporter Elena Abbott investigates a series of grisly crimes that the police have ignored. Crimes she knows to be the work of dark occult forces. Forces that took her husband from her. Forces she has sworn to destroy.

“We’re beyond thrilled to be working with Saladin and Sami again to bring ABBOTT back for its final chapter,” said Executive Editor, Eric Harburn. “Ever since the series debut in 2018, Elena’s journey has been a prescient, harrowing look at American society through the lens of Detroit – and ABBOTT: 1979 carries on that tradition in brilliant and unexpected ways.”
